Provisional editorial estimate

PHASE SHIFT is an editorial index, not a scientific measurement or prediction. The reading is not a probability or a percentage of engineering work completed.

The judgment

15 October 2026 evidence-based reassessment linked to PHASE's published analysis of Wang Xingxing's 12 October one-to-two-year embodied-AI forecast. Wang reports encouraging internal GPT-6 tests, but neither a test protocol, task-level successes and failures, independent generalisation results, assistance/intervention records, nor long-horizon reliability data have been published. Unitree's separate 28 September UnifoLM-WLA-1.0-Base weights and fine-tuning-code release is verifiable progress in availability, not validation of those internal tests. Therefore all seven underlying component judgements remain unchanged; no capability improvement or deterioration is asserted. PHASE SHIFT methodology changes from provisional v1 (round weighted components to the nearest five points) to provisional v2 (publish the exact weighted total without rounding or overrides): 40x20% + 50x15% + 65x15% + 35x15% + 25x15% + 20x15% + 35x5% = exactly 39.00%. The previously displayed 40% represented this same 39.00% underlying value after legacy rounding. The apparent change from 40% to 39.00% (-1.00 percentage point) is solely a calculation/presentation-rule correction, NOT a finding that robotics capability has regressed. Preserve the 14 September 2026 40% reading and its v1 methodology as immutable history. The index is an editorial synthesis, not a probability, forecast, countdown or scientific measurement; decimal arithmetic must not be mistaken for measurement precision.

Component assessments

Generalisation40/100

Cross-task transfer is progressing in previously published research, but Unitree's new forecast is based on undisclosed internal GPT-6 tests. The task mix, held-out tasks, independent selection and success rates were not released. The WLA code and weights release does not independently establish generalisation.

Evidence 1 Evidence 2 Evidence 3 Evidence 4 Evidence 6

Manipulation50/100

Earlier developer-reported whole-body and dexterous results show useful progress alongside uneven finger manipulation. Unitree describes a wider task-capable WLA system and has released weights/code, but no independent repeatability or error-recovery results are available for the newly claimed GPT-6 tests.

Evidence 1 Evidence 3 Evidence 6 Evidence 7

Language → Action65/100

The existing evidence supports conversion of high-level instructions into multi-step physical actions. Wang reports good results with GPT-6 on Unitree robots, but neither the integration method nor a controlled before/after comparison is public. This does not yet justify a higher capability score.

Evidence 1 Evidence 2 Evidence 3 Evidence 4 Evidence 6

Unseen Environments35/100

Published research shows some transfer to unfamiliar homes, but arbitrary unseen-environment performance remains unproven. No publicly documented unfamiliar-scene evaluation, denominator or intervention protocol accompanies the new Unitree forecast.

Evidence 2 Evidence 3 Evidence 4 Evidence 5

Long-Horizon Autonomy25/100

Short multi-step sequences and development-loop automation are not evidence of unattended, long-duration physical autonomy. Wang says humans still judge the company's loop outputs; the new internal experiments provide no duration, recovery or supervision logs.

Evidence 1 Evidence 3 Evidence 5

Reliability20/100

No independently testable repeated success rates, trial counts, physical resets, safety failures or remote-intervention statistics have been disclosed for the reported GPT-6 tests. Reliability remains the main constraint on a higher reading.

Evidence 1 Evidence 3 Evidence 4 Evidence 5

Cost / Deployment35/100

Releasing WLA weights and fine-tuning code improves developer access, but does not establish lower all-in deployed cost. Wang acknowledges ongoing constraints on scaling and efficiency; there is no independently verified operating-cost or low-intervention commercial deployment evidence to re-rate this dimension.

Methodology used

PHASE SHIFT provisional v2 — exact weighted total

An editorial assessment of readiness for broadly useful, instruction-led robotics in unfamiliar environments. Zero means no general-purpose capability; 25 means mostly narrow demonstrations; 50 means varied tasks demonstrated with substantial operational limitations; 75 means repeated useful deployment across unfamiliar settings with limited intervention; 100 means broad, accessible and reliably useful general-purpose robotics. These anchors are judgments, not measured stages of a fixed engineering programme.

Assess seven dimensions from linked evidence, giving greater weight to transfer and reliability than publicity. Manufacturer demonstrations are attributed claims, not independent validation. Preserve the exact decimal weighted component total without rounding or overrides. Component scores may contain decimals. Reassessments preserve their sources, component judgments and methodology version. AI assists research and drafting; a human editor remains responsible. No automatic updates or forecasts are in operation.
